6th April – Lester Simpson & Nigel Corbett – ‘Will Ye Go To Flanders’
One hundred years after the end of The Great War, Lester Simpson and Nigel Corbett present an alternative commemoration in songs and music accompanied on a variety of stringed instruments, accordion and bagpipes. Lester first became involved with ‘Peace Concerts Passchendaele’ in 1994 and over the intervening years has written many songs and tunes inspired by frequent trips to the battlefields of Flanders.
The show will use both Lester’s songs and others contemporary with WWI. Nigel has played with, amongst others, The Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra, Prego, Feet First and Some Antics. His musical collaboration with Lester began in 2000 with a ‘Peace Concerts Passchendaele’ production called ‘Standing in Line’ which premiered in the parish church of Passendale. For the 2018 centenary commemoration in Ypres of WWI, Lester and Nigel were commissioned to create and perform a musical soundscape to accompany an installation by the 2018 Flanders Fields artist in residence Val Carman.
